Should You Upgrade the Internal Storage in the M2 MacBook Air?
With the M2 MacBook Air should you upgrade the internal storage or does purchasing an external SSD save you money? As a longer term investment is it better to just upgrade the internal storage of the M2, or should you wait as your budget allows and then add an external SSD? Is the base model storage at 256GBs enough, or will you be wanting more?
I’ve reviewed several SSD options over the years and as far as saving money, I also like to save time. I've got a few portable solutions that I continue to recommend and have had great success in my workflow. Is the Samsung 980 PRO still worth the investment?

The M2 MacBook Air is Confusing

    Your MBA is 8go ? How is it for video editing and sound production ?

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN 12 днів тому

      No, 16GBs. I’d honestly recommend the extra memory for this type of work flow. Many people test these with base specs, but after you have the machine on and several apps running, you’re going to be experiencing some throttling. These machines are efficient, but for heavier tasks it’s really best to invest in a bit more memory if you want a solid experience.

    How do you pair/sync the audio and video together? or are they connected somehow through a cord so that you do not have to match up in post production?

      I should do a video on this, but I did (somewhat) touch on this in this video: ua-cam.com/video/sPKCmXeHhCI/v-deo.html Starting at about 8:15 in the video and then I show a workflow later on. Basically, before you get into the podcast content and you have your video recording and the audio being recorded, you just count down 3-2-1 and then clap. You’ll then sync up those spiked waveforms from the clap.

      @@KevinRossRN thank you for replying! Please help me out lmao. I’m using the M1 8GB iMac, and i believe the codec for FCP is H.264 something like that? i also just ordered the M3 pro MacBook.

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN 18 днів тому

      @ArmyBarbie Well, that base model iMac (unfortunately) is going to struggle a bit. As far as the codec, just wondering about the camera footage. Also, are you doing a rough cut first, and then going back and adding effects? Also, have you tried transcoding the footage first in FCPX? It’ll take a little time to do depending on how long the timeline is, but it should help it run smoother. As far as the M3, it should chew through the timeline. Did you at least add a little extra memory to your build?

    • @ArmyBarbie
      @ArmyBarbie 18 днів тому

      @@KevinRossRN yes i got the 18GB 512SSD i hope that’s enough. I didn’t understand computer specs before buying the iMac, so now it collects dust smh. I’m filming in 4K using the Sony ZV-E1. I use proxy on my 8GB MacBook and it works but takes days to edit 😂 so hopefully this new MacBooks works better. Is there anything i could do to the iMac?

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN 18 днів тому

      @ArmyBarbie That codec should be pretty efficient to work with. I think when these machines first came out they were “screaming” through these timelines when compared with their predecessors. Aside from working with proxies and transcoding the footage before, just make sure you’re minimizing any other demands on the machine (closing other programs) due to that 8GBs of memory. With the constant iteration of these video editors they offer more features, but start to demand more from the machine. That spec of MBP should be just fine. It really should be a night and day experience because of the video processing capability in that particular chipset.

    Careful with thunderbolt 4 hubs from Anker. I have learned they have compatibility issues ie with new Apple products. I had to replace my HUB due to this issue as Anker will not deal with the problem. I think they may not support Apple for some strange reason.

      The extra memory will certainly help with Lightroom. It’s what I use and it’ll take a good portion of it. The quick videos will be fine on the MBA. The advantage of the MBP is the fan and that thermal envelope. For sustained workflows you’ll notice a difference, but with the shorter videos I doubt you’d even have that concern. Honestly I often recommend going with a little more memory. I don’t know anyone that has regretted it. I still use my M2 MBA every day and do some light editing from time to time. I still haven’t upgraded my M1 MBP because everything I’ve thrown at it, it just tears right through it. But again, for your use case right now, the MBA.

      I would recommend just recording separately with the camera. Then, you’d take the audio tracks from the iPad and the video from the camera and drop all of those into a video editor. You’d remove the audio from the camera because the built in mic isn’t going to sound good at all, but it’s great to use it as a reference for the better quality you’re getting from the interface and iPad. Hopefully that makes sense.

      Well, because it’s not just the advertised speed of the NVMe in the enclosure, but the communication protocol and the point of failure which is that it’s connected externally and not soldered to the board. However, it can still be a viable option for many use cases. I have many external enclosures that are still going strong.

    Great stuff, man. Straightforward and extremely informative. A breath of fresh air, really. Subbed. Question: Got a base M2 model a couple of days ago. Will be using it for short (3-5 minute videos weekly) 1-2 timelines with sparse effects and minimal color grading in Resolve. Also using some Adobe AE. Down the line plan to use DJI Osmo pocket 3 4K footage (I am guessing 265 is a no go...) Good enough or should I swap it, if I can now, with the M2 16GB? Again, much appreciated for the non-nonsense comparison.

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN 2 місяці тому

      Thanks! So have you tested it with AE yet? As far as the OSMO those compressed files are probably going to give the machine a run, but you should be able to scrub through your timeline. The base model will hit that swap pretty quick, which you won’t notice until you start adding more to the timeline and then sprinkle in those effects…and of course if you’re running any other applications. I still use this device daily, but not so much for creative work. I may run some Lightroom or photoshop every now and again, but I will say that I’ve typically run several browsers with a hundred+ tabs open and the 16GBs hasn’t let me down. Hi there! Your channel is amazing. I started my podcast because of you showing me how to set up the sound on my iPad and record. Question I am looking to expand to youtube and use my phone camera to record the podcasts and the mics/audio interface you advised in the iPad podcasting video. How can I sync my audio and video using my iPad? Thank you!

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN 2 місяці тому

      Congrats on the podcast. Happy to have helped. So, I did do a video on this, but can’t recall the exact one. If you’re still recording the audio through the interface to the iPad and then the iPhone video is separate, I assume you have a video editing software you’re working with (or will). I would just take that audio clip from the iPad you recorded on and move that into your video editor, and then the video (with the raw audio) will be placed on top of the audio in the timeline. The easy way to sync this up is to clap really loud at the beginning before starting the show and then you can see these wave forms in the audio tracks from the iPad and the iPhone. Line up those spikes in the track, and then once they’re synced, then just lower the volume on the audio from the phone and you should still be synced up with the better audio from the iPad. Hopefully that is what you’re asking about. And if not, I’ll take another crack at it 😁

      @@KevinRossRN Thank you so much for your quick and detailed response!! I use iMovie but for some reason it gets synced up in the beginning perfectly but then as the video plays (they are usually around 1.5 hours) the sync gets off, not by a lot but enough to definitely notice. So I was wondering if there was a different software besides iMovie you recommend for the iPad that would work? I haven’t gotten my laptop yet but if it will make my editing process easier I am definitely going to look into it. I have heard Adobe Premier Pro is perfect for syncing but unfortunately I need a laptop for that…. Also!! I am looking to upgrade my camera eventually for videoing, is there one you recommend for podcasting videos that doesn’t break the bank? Thank you SO much for all of your help. @yelinadavis For an iPad editing experience I’d recommend either LumaFusion, Davinci Resolve for iPad, or Final Cut Pro for iPad. Davinci is free. The money would be from a tip jar thanks to viewers that see the final result. If you studied video production, what about finding a couple of creators that you could edit for to bring in a little cash just to show (your family) you’re making something of that degree?
